Manual inspection by batch number instead of serial number

At present, manual inspection in WATS is performed once, and only once, we enter a serial number for the device under inspection and this serial number must be unique.

Some parts that could be inspected with WATS don't have a unique serial number, think for exemple about custom plastic or metallic parts. They have a batch number, a date code, an order number... that is the same for the whole batch, for every part.

I would like to create a manual inspection sequence for those parts and deploy it but not to be asked for a unique serial number for each part in the batch but to be asked rather for a batch number attached to every inspected part, the same batch number.

A workaround could be use the serial number as the batch number if we could enter the same serial number for all the parts we want to inspect but for WATS it is not possible not to have unique serial numbers.

Another workaround could be not to make serial number field mandatory if batch number is not empty.

Generally we don't reply to the feature requests unless we need clarification on details of the request. With regards to this request, it is something that has been discussed several times internally before, and is considered for implementation. But we don't know when yet. If/when it gets scheduled, we will mark this feature request thread as planned.

I wrote this idea 2 weeks ago and, as I was encouraged by Virinco to write it and as I was told that I was not the only one to want this feature, I expected any answer.
